Sport plays a significant role in the holistic education of students. A wide range of sporting opportunities exist for all of our students. In Years 7 -10 students participate each week in the Sport for Life programme at the College. This programme is designed to allow students to gain an appreciation of the benefits of physical activity regardless of their fitness or skill level.

Students have the opportunity to represent the College in a range of sports through the Broken Bay Secondary Sports Association (BBSSSA), New South Wales Combined Catholic Colleges (NSWCCC), NSW All Schools and School Sport Australia. St Leo’s Catholic College has developed many outstanding sportsmen and sportswomen who have competed at State, National and International levels.

Representative Sport

The College has a proud sporting tradition for both boys and girls. The Representative Sports programme at the College offers students the opportunity to compete in a wide range of sports throughout the year.

There are two tiers that make-up the College Representative Sport programme.

Tier 1 Representative Sport

Tier 1 representative sport is for our highly competitive students and provides them with the opportunity of representing at a regional, state and national level should they be selected through our pathway sports associations of BBSSSA, NSWCCC, NSW All-Schools and School Sport Australia.

The BBSSSA aims to provide competitive sporting opportunities for students to participate in organised sporting events throughout the school year against other Catholic Schools in the Broken Bay Diocese.

Peninsula Cup Weekly Competition

The Peninsula Cup is a weekly competition played after school predominantly in the Northern Beaches against schools such as Mater Maria and St Paul’s.  St Leo’s enters teams for all available sports and has had great success in this competition.

High Performance Sports Programme

The College facilitates elite athletes in their quest for sporting success.

Currently Aerobics and Football are part of the High Performance Sports Programme at the College.  The Representative Sports Committee is looking to expand this programme to other sports.

Aerobics caters for students in Years 7 to 12, both boys and girls.  The programme is run by dedicated St Leo’s staff and coaches who are all past members of the St Leo’s Aerobics programme.  This team consistently competes at the State and National levels.

The College Football programme is a highly competitive squad that has an International Tour to Europe scheduled.  The squad will travel to Europe visiting and training with Premier League Football Clubs such as Manchester United and Liverpool.

Sport for Life Programme

All students in Years 7 -10 participate in the Sport for Life programme each week. Each cohort has the opportunity to participate in a wide variety of sporting activities throughout the year on their allocated days:

Year 7                        Friday                                     Year 9            Monday

Year 8                        Thursday                               Year 10          Wednesday

The aim of the Sport for Life programme is to allow students to gain an appreciation for physical activity regardless of their fitness or skill level. The College endeavours to make sport and physical activity part of the daily lives of our students, so that it becomes a lifestyle, and hopefully a routine that students can continue to follow even after leaving school.

To maximise participation and allow them to reach their full potential, students are separated into male and female groups. In Years 8 – 10 there is an extension programme called the Accelerated Sport Programme (ASP). The ASP is available to students who compete at a higher level of sport and are passionate about sport and physical activity. There is a selection criteria that involves a series of fitness skills tests. Students who have represented the College in various sports may also be considered for the programme.

The ASP allows our sporting programme to be specialised and caters for the needs of highly competitive athletes.
